The Ideas Hub Chelmsford is a registered Charity (Number 1164085), based in Chelmsford Central Library, Essex. It is run ‘for the community by the community’, by dedicated volunteers.

Its main goal is to promote education and community cohesion for  the City of Chelmsford, particularly in the City centre.

The Ideas Hub  works in partnership with and acts as a catalyst between  the local authorities, businesses, local charities & community groups and individual pro-active changemakers  to build a stronger  inclusive community in the City. The idea is not to replicate what exists already but to establish where the gaps are and to work at filling those gaps.

The Ideas Hub achieves its goal by providing   a  welcoming and accessible space for the community and by organising and supporting a wide range of  educational and  local community events including Arts & Culture, Heritage & Science, and Environment & Sustainability.

A community venue to provide:

  •          An information point for Locals and Visitors to Chelmsford

For locals, we have started “mapping” Chelmsford to collect information about services, clubs and activities across all ages, local events etc. This is also a place for those providing community activities and services to promote their offerings.

For both locals and visitors, we are working with Alan Pamphilon, a renowned local historian, to develop materials about Chelmsford (leaflets, trail maps, walks etc), including its rich history and heritage, and running guided ‘Walks and Talks’.

  •           A “Living Room in the City” (based on a Scandinavian concept)

This is a welcoming ‘intergenerational’ and multi-cultural space where anyone can drop in at any time, relax with a cuppa, and have someone to engage in conversation with (from a “what’s the weather like” to being a spring board for a new idea), and/or take part in an arranged activity (Art, Knitting & Sewing, Games, and much more). We also offer more specific support such as Legal Support.

An important aspect of our service is to provide a welcome venue for Support Groups to run their events (e.g. Other Halves – a group supporting those living with dementia). In the near future we are also hoping to offer a Bereavement Support Group.

  •            A “Learning through Play” Centre (to come soon)

We are looking to establish a STEAM Learning Centre (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) which will run after school and during the holidays to engage local children & teens with activities mixing creativity and technology as well as Pure Art and Pure Tech activities.

The Ideas Hub Chelmsford is a registered Arts Award Centre: ubH

Local events organised and/or supported by the Ideas Hub

  • Chelmsford History Walks

These walks are run on behalf of the Ideas Hub Chelmsford by local historian Alan Pamphilon who is writing and running a wide range of entertaining and informative walks across the City to uncover and explain its considerable hidden heritage and history. His walks include: Chilling Tales, Industrial Heritage, the History of Moulsham Street, and much more:

  • Ideas Festival: An Annual Chelmsford Festival of Ideas

Taking place in the autumn, the Ideas Festival is aimed at stimulating people’s minds and passions and bringing local people together with an inspiring programme of events and activities, including discussions and debates, walks & talks, arts, and an array of other activities each year.

We believe in working together for a better future. Together we can generate the ideas to address the challenges and realise the possibilities. We believe in the power of education and ideas to transform lives, and the value of engaging diverse audiences for a collaborative and dynamic City.

  • Visual Arts Exhibitions

We are working to facilitate the exhibition of Visual Arts across the City from local, amateur and professional artists. We are working with empty shops to create local art window displays. We are also in the process of re-establishing an Art Trail in Chelmsford and we run Art Competitions for local artists.

We can’t do this alone. We work with, and are grateful for, the support of local businesses, local retailers, Chelmsford Cathedral, The Transition Chelmsford Gallery, Chelmsford Museum, Hylands and Hive studios, local Schools and of course local artists.
